WATERVILLE — The Colby women’s lacrosse team began their season with a stunning 11-10 New England Small College Athletic Conference win over Trinity on Saturday.

The Bantams entered the game as the No. 2 ranked team in the country, and are the four-time defending NESCAC champions.

Abby Hatch and Abby Hooper each led the Mules (1-0, 1-0 NESCAC) with three goals each. Hatch scored the game-winner for the Mules with 16.2 seconds remaining, off an assist from Emilie Klein.

Dana Swaffield added two goals for Colby.

Martha Griffin and Molly Cox each had two goals for Trinity (0-1, 0-1 NESCAC). The last time Colby defeated Trinity was in 2009.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

UNH 65, MAINE 56: Shaun Lawton scored 16 points for the Black Bears in an America East loss to the Wildcats in Durham, N.H.

Zargo Valjarevic scored 11 points, while Aaron Calixte and Troy Reid-Knight each added 10 points for Maine (3-26, 2-14 AE).

Matt Miller scored 24 points for UNH (18-11, 11-5 AE).

NORDIC SKIING

Colby’s Olivia Amber finished 13th in the women’s 15-kilometer class mass start at the Eastern Championships in Lake Placid, N.Y.

Amber finished with a time of 55:40.0. Teammate Amy Bianco finished 28th, with a time of 58:09.1.

The Colby men’s team finished sixth in the 20K classic mass thanks to Jeff Tucker, who finished 19th, along with Silas Eastman finishing 20th and Calvin Wright finishing in 21st place.

ALPINE SKIING

The Colby women’s alpine team finished in second place in the slalom at the Eastern Championships in Lake Placid, N.Y.

Craig Marshall finished 11th place in the men’s slalom.

The Colby women had 106 points and finished behind the University of Vermont.

Mardi Haskell took fourth place with two-run total time of 1:54.41. Sierra Leavitt took eighth place and Paige Whistler was 11th.

Marshall helped the Colby men take eighth place with his runs of 56.73 and 56.81 for a total time of 1:53.54.
