One of central Maine’s top martial arts showcases is back for its 35th year.

The Battle of Maine Martial Arts Championships will be held from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday at Sukee Arena in Winslow.

While the opening ceremonies are set for a 10 a.m. start, the action begins at 9 with three special demonstrations. The Club Hana Demo Team, Team Dragon Fire, and the 2015 Huard’s Sports Karate Demo Team will all be performing for the spectators.

The cost for spectators is $10 for an all-day pass,. The Battle of Maine has the subtitle, “Competing to Help Save Children’s Lives!” and $1 from each ticket sold will be donated to the Children’s Miracle Network.

Patrick Cunio, a young boy from New Hampshire, will be honored at the opening ceremonies for raising over $1,100 for the competition.

“We know the importance of having excellent quality healthcare for children that’s available right here in our backyard,” event organizer Mark Huard said. “Through the years, we’ve raised $60,000, and we’re excited to see how much our students raise this year.”

As usual the Huard family is heavily involved in the Battle of Maine. The event flier lists the promoters/directors as Kancho Randy Huard, Renshi Mike Huard, and Sensei Mark Huard. The only tournament staff members listed are Connie Huard and Kellie Huard.

There are over 120 divisions at the Battle of Maine. Competitors are paying either $50 (if they pre-register) or $60 to take part.

One interesting form is called Fusion Fighting. According to the competition’s Facebook page, Fusion Fighting combines kickboxing and grappling while using more safety equipment.
