These are troubling times. Some conservative Republican representatives in Congress are totally dismissive and disrespectful of the American voters, who twice elected our current president and his social justice-oriented goals. They claim that the wishes of their constituents are what the majority of Americans desire. That’s quite a leap.

Some behave like street-corner crazies and some are spin doctors who are prone to use twisted versions of history and religion to bolster their power and influence. They are not true leaders because true leaders are not controlled by elections and opinion polls. Both major parties are guilty of this.

Some far-right, mean-spirited politicians, along with their constituents, would love to repeal the Affordable Care Act. The fact that this would literally put people’s health and lives at risk does not seem to exist or enter into their reality. Many of these same Republicans lie repeatedly with no guilt or shame displayed at all. Some are paranoid and like to issue propaganda documentaries against the existing administration on television and the Internet. They also love to promote fear tactics in their right-wing radio broadcasts by bombarding us with negative sensory input. Their ultimate goal is to destroy the progressive movement and, if need be, our democracy along with it.

Another cause for concern is that a certain majority of U.S. Supreme Court justices vote in favor of rulings that are dangerously close to ruining our democracy by favoring the greedy and the power seekers as opposed to issuing rulings that would empower the spirit of the average American. Sadly, it now seems that our modern times are really the new “dark ages,” and we live in a world that devalues human connection and compassion of any kind in favor of profit.
