A man wanted in connection with the murder of his girlfriend is still on the run, and Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said police still are on the lookout at the scene of his last sighting.

McCausland said state police, the Maine Warden Service and Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Office are continuing to search for Robert Burton. It has been more than a week since police confirmed Burton had been seen along a snowmobile trail in Guilford, and there have been no confirmed sightings since.

State police on Friday parked one of their crime vans in the center of Guilford along Route 15 to pass out fliers to motorists in hopes of getting a lead.

A local resident saw him around 5:45 p.m. June 17. McCausland said, “Burton was seen stepping onto the trail from the woods, saw the other man and then quickly disappeared back into the woods.”

Burton continues to be described as armed, dangerous and desperate. Area residents should continue to lock houses, vehicles and any outbuildings as well as leave any outside lights on at night.

Anyone with information about Burton’s whereabouts or any suspicious activity in the area is encouraged to call 911 or the state police in Bangor at 973-3700.
