The Maine Majestix under-19 field hockey club began play in the National Field Hockey Club Championship on Wednesday with a pair of losses in Lancaster, Pa.
Consisting of players from Messalonskee, Lawrence, Winslow, Winthrop and Scarborough high schools, the Waterville-based Majestix fell to North East Elite, 4-1, then dropped the second game to Boston, 3-1.
Winslow alum Bethany Winkin opened the scoring in the first game for the Majestix with a goal. North East Elite scored to send the game into halftime at 1-1, then pulled away with three goals in the second half.
In the second game, Boston jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first half. Maine played a much stronger game in the second half and got a goal from Belfast’s Kylie Nelson to pull within two goals in the second half but couldn’t close the gap. Delaney Wood of Winslow played well in goal in both games for Maine.
The tournament continues Thursday with the Majestix first game at 10 a.m.
The Majestix under-16 team wrapped up its tournament on Tuesday with a 3-3 record.
