Maine State Police are assisting Bath police with the investigation of a shooting late Monday afternoon in the parking lot of the Shaw’s supermarket off Route 1, said state police spokesman Steve McCausland. A woman who has not been identified was shot in the head in what police are characterizing as an accidental shooting.

“Initial indications are that the shooter was intending to sell the gun to another person who he met up with in the parking lot,” McCausland said. The potential buyer was not injured.

Police and emergency responders were notified at 3:54 p.m. that someone had been shot.

Bath Police Lt. Robert Savary said when they arrived, they found a woman in a car who had a gunshot wound to her head. She was initially taken by ambulance to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick before being transferred to Maine Medical Center in Portland.

There was no word on her condition.

Savary said the person who shot the woman has been identified and is an acquaintance of the victim. Police say he has been cooperative and was still being interviewed Monday evening.

No arrests have been made. Police are trying to contact the victim’s family.
