On May 21, Kennebec Valley Community College graduated the Electrical Lineworker Technology program class of 2016. The program is a one-year certificate program, the only one of its kind in the Northeast, and the primary workforce provider for the region’s utility industry. The program is an excellent example of the economic benefit that can be realized when industry partners with our community colleges.

Students graduate from the ELT program with the technical background and the manual skills necessary for careers in the installation and maintenance of electrical power, telephone and cable television systems. Safety, pole climbing and teamwork are emphasized throughout the curricula while the student learns and performs overhead and underground construction.

Using modern training equipment, innovative training methods and highly trained faculty members, the program endeavors to fully prepare students for a variety of line occupations. Graduates can expect to earn $35,000-$40,000 in their first year of employment, and as our utility infrastructure is updated, this program is graduating the workforce necessary to accomplish that substantial need.

The success of the program can be seen in our company. On Target Utility Services is New England’s largest private locating service and a well-equipped power line construction company. We are addressing regional utility infrastructure needs and more than 80 percent of our construction division workforce are graduates of the ELT program. Company leadership supports the college and the program, helping to shape the curriculum and provide training.

On Target is proud of our partnership with KVCC and our involvement with the Electrical Lineworkers Technology program. We congratulate the class of 2016 and look forward to seeing you on the job.
