The Whitefield Trails Committee will host a hike on the new Sheepscot West Branch Trail in Whitefield at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 4, which is National Trails Day. A rain date is set for 1 p.m. Sunday, June 5.

The hike will start at the trail head at the Whitefield Salmon Preserve, at the end of Howe Road (do not forget that DOT closed the bridge at this location). The new 1.5-mile trail meanders through mixed hardwood forest along the west branch of the Sheepscot River. The hike is suitable for the whole family, provided you wear comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes.

National Trails Day started in 1993 and is organized by the American Hiking Society to celebrate trails across the country with special events.

The Sheepscot West Branch Trail is the third trail constructed by the new ad hoc Whitefield Trails Committee. The WTC opened the first two trails, the Marrs Ridge Trail on center Hunt’s Meadow Road and the Happy Farm River Trail off the Townhouse Road, last year.
