Our honorable governor has overlooked one of the most obvious injustices to the welfare system. We understand that many recipients of EBT cards report them lost and are issued replacements. In fact, it has been reported that someone lost more than 40 EBT cards in one year.

EBT cards are like cash. If the state issued $20 bills instead of those pieces of plastic, would those bills be replaced if they were reported lost? I doubt it. Those who receive the cards would treat them like cash if they knew lost cards would not be replaced.

If I use my debit card to get cash from an ATM machine, and I lose my card, I can get a replacement. If I lose one of the bills I get from that ATM machine I cannot get that replaced. What’s the difference between the EBT card and my cash?

As a former governor, James Longley, used to say, “Think about it.”
