WINSLOW — Police are looking for a woman who reportedly fled the scene of a car crash Tuesday morning that knocked down an electricity pole, cutting power to hundreds in the area.

Police received a call at 8:47 a.m. Tuesday about a single-vehicle crash on Augusta Road just past the intersection with Verti Drive. The vehicle, a sedan, was traveling north on U.S. Route 201, which is also called Augusta Road, according to Lt. Josh Veilleux, of the Winslow Police Department. The sedan’s right front tire went off the road and into the grass.

According to witnesses, the driver overcorrected and struck a pole owned by Central Maine Power, knocking the pole down. That left 536 customers in Vassalboro and Winslow without power from 8:49 a.m. until 9:30 a.m., according to CMP spokesperson Gail Rice.

Power was restored after that and a CMP crew was replacing the broken pole as of 11 a.m., Veilleux said.

Witnesses told police the driver was a woman around 30 years old, Veilleux said. She reportedly fled on foot after crashing and started to flag down cars. She was picked up by a white Ford Taurus with dark tinted windows, witnesses told police, and it headed north toward town before police could locate it.

Police have sent out an advisory about the car to other local police departments, Veilleux said, and the driver faces a charge of leaving the scene of an accident. That’s a class E misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.
