DOVER-FOXCROFT — Marain Zawistowski made 19 saves and Lexi Lewis scored the game-winning goal in the second overtime to lift fourth-seeded Lawrence to a 1-0 upset win over No. 1 Foxcroft Academy in the Class B North field hockey semifinals Monday afternoon.

“These kids have a ton of heart,” Lawrence coach Shawna Robinson said. “They’re gaining confidence. They believe in themselves and their teammates. There’s not a lot of individuals on this team.”

The No. 4 Bulldogs (12-4) will face No. 3 Belfast (15-1) in the regional final Wednesday at Hampden Academy. The loss was the first of the season for the top-seeded Ponies, who end the season at 15-1.

This was Lawrence’s second double overtime victory of the tournament — the Bulldogs knocked out No. 5 Old Town in the quarterfinals. Lewis’ goal was set up by Macie Larouche, whose quick shot on a breakaway was saved. The rebound went to Lewis, who lifted her game-winning shot to the left corner of the cage with 5:25 left in the second overtime.

Foxcroft controlled play for much of the game, gaining 15 penalty corners to just four for the Bulldogs. Lewis’ game-winner was just the fifth Lawrence shot on goal. A first-year varsity goalie, Zawistowski kept the Bulldogs in the game with a number of key saves, Robinson said.

Robinson also praised the play of the Lawrence defenders, led by center midfielder Molly Folsom.

“She’s so calm and consistent. Consistently cool,” Robinson said of Folsom.

Cass Poli, Hunter Mercier, Lauren Lambert, and Camryn Caldwell also had strong games, Robinson said.

“If you asked me three months ago if I thought we’d be here (in the regional final), I would have laughed at you,” Robinson said.
