GARDINER — A nearly complete modular home under construction on Brunswick Avenue was damaged by fire Saturday morning.

The home was unoccupied and the owners of the property where it was being built had not moved their belongings into it yet.

The new home, on outer Brunswick Avenue, near the Richmond line, was being built by Ralph’s Homes. The property is owned by Lloyd and Debra Monroe, according to Gardiner Fire Capt. Marcel DeForge.

The building sustained significant damage, and its roof will need to be replaced, DeForge said. He said the home was roughly 90 percent complete.

The fire was reported at 7:12 a.m. by someone who saw smoke, looked into the building and saw fire.

DeForge said it was under control by 7:31 a.m. He said the whole attic was burning when firefighters arrived on the scene.

No firefighters were injured while extinguishing the fire.

DeForge said the fire appears to be accidental and to have started in the attic, and it is not considered to be of suspicious origin. The state fire marshal’s office was notified to determine a cause of the fire.

Firefighters from Farmingdale, Randolph, Pittston, West Gardiner, Togus and Richmond went to the fire scene, while firefighters from Augusta provided backup coverage for Gardiner during the fire.

Many of the firefighters who responded from area communities also had helped fight a house fire earlier Saturday morning in Pittston.
