PITTSFIELD — Maine Central Institute recently announced its top students for the class of 2017. The top ranking is based solely on grade point average.

Brayden Rollins, the valedictorian, has been a member of the varsity soccer team, lacrosse team/club, jazz band and vocal jazz groups all four years at MCI. He is a founding member of the Student Philanthropy Council, and has participated in the jazz combo and Ella Night for three years.

Rollins is the son of Darcy and Ronny Rollins, of Pittsfield.

Salutatorian Hunter Wintle has been a member of the indoor and outdoor track teams, and the soccer team all four years at MCI. He served as the captain of both the soccer team and the outdoor track team for two years and also has been a member of Seacoast United, a premier soccer team, for four years. In addition, he has been a member of the vocal jazz band, the jazz band and the Kindness Krew.

He is the son of Colleen and Michael Wintle, of Detroit.

Carter Richmond has been a member of the indoor and outdoor track teams, and the soccer team, serving as the captain of all three teams. In addition, he has been a member of the jazz band and the jazz combo. Richmond won first place in the Manson Essay competition his junior year.

He is the son of Trudy and Lance Richmond, of Pittsfield.

Carter Pearl is the president of the class, a member of the MCI Key Club, vice president of the National Honor Society, an officer in the Student Council and has served as a peer tutor. He has played basketball and golf all four years and has served as a captain of both teams his junior and senior years. In addition, he is the president and founder of the MCI Philanthropy Council.

Pearl is the son of Darcy and Jay Pearl, of Newport.

Jessica Smith has been a member of MCI’s Coding Club and Book Club. She also plays the drums and was very involved with the band, The Resistance, for six years. In addition to performing, Smith ran the band’s website and YouTube channel, and filmed and edited their videos. As a result of her work with the band, she received the 2015 Entrepreneurship Award from Hardy Girls Healthy Women.

She is the daughter of Rhonda and Jerald Smith, of Burnham.

An (Emily) Van has been a member of the Entrepreneurship Club and the Math Team at MCI. She served as the vice president of the Math Team and finished third in the state championship meet. Van has been a member of the Fencing Club and the track team.

Van is the daughter of Truc Thi Thanh Phan and Truc Cong Van of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Marshall Lawler has been a member of the Outdoor Adventure Club and National Honor Society. He also plays guitar and tutors students in Spanish.

He is the son of Pamela and Marshall Lawler of Pittsfield.

Abigail Bernier has been a member of the cross country, indoor and outdoor track teams. She has also been a member of the Student Council, National Honor Society, Student Leadership Committee and Kindness Krew.

Bernier is the daughter of Tina and Matthew Bernier, of Pittsfield.

Emily Richmond has been a member of the field hockey team and Key Club all four years at MCI. She has also been a member of the Drama Team, Philanthropy Council, and MCI’s Mentor Program. Richmond won the Miss Junior Teen Maine competition in 2014.

Lanqing (Cathy) Huang has been a member of the Math Team, Art Club, Paper Art Club and rifle team. She has also served as a member of the Student Ambassador Club and peer tutor.

Huang is the daughter of Xiaomei Zhang and Hai Huang of Shanghai, China.

MCI’s Commencement will take place at noon Sunday, June 4, on the Boutelle Savage Front Campus (rain site: Wright Gymnasium).
