Tim Brown operates a mini-excavator that lifts a gravestone into place Tuesday in Riverside Cemetery in Augusta. City workers, along with Brown and two workers from his company, Brownies Landscaping and Excavating, of Whitefield, were fixing the damage done during a vandalism rampage last week. Brown was donating the time and equipment to fix the stones. Augusta police Lt. Christopher Massey said detectives still are investigating the vandalism, which damaged more than 100 headstones and nearly a dozen cars sometime during the night of Nov. 11 or early the next morning.

Stephen Thompson said Wednesday that he wanted to buy the George H. Bailey painting that was used as a front plate for a 19th century book about horses to preserve a piece of Maine’s equine history. The 1873 painting by Bailey, depicting a horse named King William, was turned over to Thompson’s non-profit group at a ceremony in Augusta.
