Construction is set to resume on Interstate 295 in the Portland area Sunday night, according to the Maine Department of Transportation.

Work on the highway is expected to continue through the fall and will require lane shifts and some lane closers, department spokesman Mark Latti said. While two lanes of traffic will remain open during weekdays between the hours of 6 a.m. and 7 p.m., motorists should be aware these changes could cause delays.

Starting this week, crews will establish a long-term lane closure on the Fore River Bridge and begin repairs, Latti said. The following week, repair of the St. John Street and St. James Street bridges will begin.

During this time, the Exit 5B off-ramp and the Park Avenue on-ramp, both southbound, will be closed. Latti said alternate routes will be indicated using Exit 5A.

Between Portland and Falmouth, crews will also be installing guardrails, and a traffic signal on the Franklin Arterial northbound on-ramp will be installed to help regulate merging traffic from 4 to 6 p.m. weekdays, Latti said.

The construction project is aimed at improving the safety and traffic mobility on the highway, as well as preserving the infrastructure, Latti said.
