PORTLAND — The leader of Maine’s Roman Catholics has set aside a special “day of atonement” to help heal the wounds of clergy sexual abuse.

Today’s day of penance and prayer includes a special Mass led by Bishop Richard Malone at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland.

Pastors and administrators throughout Maine are being urged to open their churches for at least a few hours during the day for people to join in prayer and acts of penance.
