MECHANIC FALLS — Speed was the determining factor in a crash Friday night that killed two and left two injured.

The accident occurred around 9:40 p.m. on Elm Street, Maine State Police Spokesman Steve McCausland said. Adam Nile, 19, of Poland was driving his mother’s car when he went off the road and struck a tree on the driver’s side, McCausland said.

Nile and the front seat passenger, Britney Wentworth, 18, of Poland, died from injuries sustained.

Rodney Westleigh, 18, and Zachary Sutton, 21, were in the back seat of the car. Both were transported to Central Maine Medical Center with serious injuries, McCausland said. A nurse supervisor on duty said Westleigh is in fair condition and Sutton has been upgraded to serious condition.

McCausland said the speed limit on Elm Street where the crash happened is 35 mph. While alcohol did not seem to be an obvious factor, he said state police continue to investigate the accident and a blood alcohol test will be done on Nile.
