KITTERY) — The victims of the worst submarine accident ever in terms of loss of life are being remembered 48 years after the tragedy.
The USS Thresher, a nuclear-powered submarine built at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and commissioned in 1961, was lost while conducting sea trials about 100 miles east of Cape Cod 48 years ago today, killing 129 crew members.
The victims were honored Saturday at a memorial service at the shipyard in Kittery. The service was followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at the water’s edge.
