AUGUSTA — Members of the Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee are hearing public testimony on a slew of gun-related measures today, most that would expand gun rights.
Among the bills are proposals to make it cheaper to apply for a concealed weapons permit and extend the length of time they are valid, allow concealed weapons in the State House and exempt guns manufactured in Maine from federal laws.
One measure would allow municipalities to restrict firearms in certain circumstances.
Proponents of expanding gun rights point to their constitutional right to bear arms and opponents point to U.S. Supreme Court rulings that have found some restrictions legal.
