WATERVILLE — A Winslow woman was taken to the hospital Monday after she was struck by a van while trying to cross Union Street.

Angela Roy, 53, was hit by a Federal Express van just before 10:09 a.m. at the corner of Union Street and College Avenue, near the Fire Department, according to police Officer Dennis Picard.

She was taken by Delta Ambulance to MaineGeneral Medical Center, where she treated and released, a hospital spokeswoman said later Monday.

The 2010 van was being driven west on Union Street by John Haefele, 59, of Winthrop, Picard said.

“He stopped and she got off the sidewalk in front of his van,” Picard said. “She was walking on the sidewalk toward the fire station and he started to go, realized she was there, bumped her, knocking her to the ground. She bumped her head on the pavement.”

Picard said Roy complained of lower back pain at the scene.

Firefighters helped at the scene.
