FRANKFORT — Maine State Police are investigating whether an infant’s death was the result of an attack by the family’s dog.

Seven-month-old Annabelle Mitchell was found dead in the living room of her home Tuesday afternoon. Her mother said in a 911 call that the dog, a Rottweiler, had attacked the baby, according to the state Department of Public Safety.

An autopsy is planned for today.

The baby was home with her mother, Katrina Mitchell, her toddler brother, and the dog at the time of her death.

State Police detectives spent the night at the Mitchell home, gathering evidence and conducting interviews. There will be further examination of the dog, which was shot to death by a Waldo County deputy at the request of the child’s father, John Mitchell, and the local animal control officer.
