BANGOR — The Maine Department of Corrections is investigating the death of an elderly inmate from the Penobscot County jail who died in the hospital after he refused to be treated for an injury he suffered when he fell in the shower.

Officials say 71-year-old Thomas Hart of Bangor died on April 9, about 24 hours after he told doctors he didn’t want to be treated for a broken hip.

Sheriff Glenn Ross says Hart died of complications associated with his refusal of treatment.

Hart had been in jail for about a month after he was arrested for failure to pay a $40 cab fare. He was being held on a probation violation charge.

Ross tells the the Bangor Daily News that Hart had no contact with other inmates.
