A fire in the basement of a home in Waterboro this morning caused several thousand dollars worth of damage.

Firefighters from Waterboro responded to a monitored alarm at about 10:30 a.m. today and arrived at 96 Panoramic Dr. to find heavy smoke coming from a three-story residence.

Nobody was home at the time, said Waterboro Fire Chief Matthew Bors. Once firefighters gained access to the home, they extinguished the fire in the daylight basement.

Bors notified the state Fire Marshal’s Office but said the fire “is not considered suspicious.”

According to Waterboro’s most recent assessment, the building is worth $374,000 and, including 265 acres, the home is pegged at more than half a million.

Bors reported no injuries and that a family pet escaped without harm. He also said the damage – from fire in the basement and smoke in upper floors – could be much greater.
