AUGUSTA — Mainers looking set off some fireworks this Fourth of July are going to have to wait another year.

Maine lawmakers approved a bill legalizing fireworks and Gov. Paul LePage signed it into law on Friday. But it doesn’t go into effect until this January.

That means the only fireworks that are currently legal for individuals are sparklers.

Next Fourth of July, Mainers will be able to buy and set off firecrackers and devices that explode in the air.

Republican Rep. Douglas Damon of Bangor sponsored the bill.
