MADISON — Two people remained in a Bangor hospital Monday after a head-on collision Saturday morning on U.S. Route 148, also known as White School House Road.

Mary Ann Bergeron, 55, of Anson and Michael Dellarme, 23, of Madison, both were taken by LifeFlight helicopter from a Skowhegan hospital to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, according to Deputy Ritchie Putnam of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department.

Dellarme was in the intensive care unit at the hospital Monday morning and was listed in critical condition with broken bones in both his legs, a ruptured spleen and possible head injuries, the deputy said. Bergeron was in stable condition with a broken ankle and a punctured calf from debris from the accident, and could be released this week.

Bergeron was in a 2002 Subaru Legacy station wagon, driving westbound on Route 148, near the intersection with Russell Road at about 10:30 a.m. Saturday when her car collided with a 1999 Mercury Sable, being driven eastbound by Dellarme, Putnam said.

“Michael drifted over the center line into the oncoming traffic; he never corrected and hit Ms. Bergeron head-on in the westbound lane, right in the blind spot of the shallow hill, there past the intersection,” Putnam said. “Both vehicles, from what witnesses have said, were traveling around the speed limit of 50 mph.”

Both were wearing seat belts, and airbags in both cars deployed, he said. There were no passengers in either car.

A state police trooper is reconstructing the accident. Both vehicles were totalled.
