After reading about the disgusting events that happened at the annual 4th of July parade in Athens, I have my own story to tell.

My wife and I, in the past, hosted a fireworks show for the residents of our little town here in Mercer. We were told it was one of the best shows to be seen in and around the surrounding areas.

It went smoothly for quite a number of years. Then, gradually, it started getting out of hand. In the beginning, folks were respectful of our property. But then, we noticed more and more young folks who no one recognized. The litter and garbage started to mount.

We began spending up to two days after the event picking cans, bottles and just plain garbage out of the grass and rock walls on our land. Some wasn’t found until it was revealed while bush hogging months later, which made a small mess into a very large one. Hence, we decided to terminate our annual event.

As usual, with humans, give them enough time, and they’ll screw up anything.
