Gov. Paul LePage visited Hampden recently to discuss Maine’s settlement with Chevron over a gas spill for $900,000.
He called the settlement “tough but fair” and bragged, “If they violate our laws we’re going to come after them.”
Such hypocrisy. This is the governor who tried to shorten the statute of limitations to a length that would make it virtually impossible to punish similar polluters. So much for “tough.”
As for “fair,” the fine works out to only $6.66 per gallon spilled, and Chevron got to wait 30 years before having to pay.
Chevron officials are laughing all the way to the bank, and the governor is whitewashing his record.
