YORK, Pa. — The MAYSA Hurricanes of the Messalonskee Area Youth Softball Association got off to a strong start Thursday at the 12-under Eastern National Tournament.

The Hurricanes won both games in opening round pool play and drew one of four No. 1 seeds in the 36-team tournament. They play today against a yet to be named opponent.

Thursday, the Hurricanes rode the two-hit, nine strikeout pitching of Kristen Pelletier to a 1-0 win against the Maryland Fury in the opener. They scored their run in the fourth inning after Taylor Easler singled, stole second and scored on a base hit by Lily Webb.

In the second game, the Hurricanes defeated the Pennsylvania Boyertown Storm 9-5 in eight innings. Pelletier picked up the win after coming on in relief of Webb in the fourth inning. Hannah Duperry contributed the game’s key hit, a two-out single in the eighth inning. Duperry added a single while teammate Dakota Bragg had three hits and two RBIs. Pelletier, who fanned five in relief, chipped in with two singles.
