Spectrum Generations, Maine’s Central Area Agency on Aging, and a nonprofit organization serving older and disabled adults, has won a national grant for $50,000 from the Meals on Wheels Association of America, Walmart Foundation for their We Sustain Maine initiative.

The initiative is part of the Meals on Wheels commitment to end senior hunger by 2020. Beginning this fall, Spectrum Generations will begin using Maine-grown vegetables, fruit, meat, poultry and dairy products from local farms to prepare more than 300,000 meals for homebound and disabled seniors across the six-county central Maine region, and Brunswick and Harpswell.

The agency competed with Meals on Wheels programs from across the United States for the grant to improve senior nutrition in central Maine. In addition to the grant, a substantial donation for We Sustain Maine has been awarded by Elsie Viles of Augusta.
