Five children from a Belgrade summer camp were treated Sunday for minor injuries when a van they were traveling in rear-ended a school bus, also from the camp, on U.S. Route 1 in front of Splashtown USA.
Sgt. Christopher Hardiman of the Saco Police Department said 64 children and adults, including councilors, were riding on the two buses that collided. The children, ranging in age 5 to 10, were on a field trip from a Belgrade summer camp, he said.
Hardiman said the name of the camp is unknown. Poland’s Bus Services Inc. in Norridgewock is the owner of both vehicles.
The accident occurred at 9:35 a.m. Sunday.
“The bus was traveling northbound on Route 1 in the passing lane and it stopped in traffic. Typically, traffic is quite heavy this time of year,” Hardiman said. “When it stopped the (van) rear-ended it.”
He said the driver of the van was distracted.
Hardiman said Saco police and fire and rescue responded along with emergency personnel from Biddeford, Scarborough and Old Orchard Beach.
“They set up a triage center to check out all the kids and people involved,” he said. “I believe only four were transported to the hospital with minor injuries. From what I understand, somebody might have had a broken nose.”
He said victims were transported by ambulance to the Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.
The uninjured children were allowed to continue to the water park, police said.
An investigation into the crash is under way, he said.
