AUGUSTA — The Augusta Board of Education meets Monday to discuss adding enough buses so all elementary schools can get out at the same time — a move intended to increase learning time at the schools.

Currently, to accommodate the bus schedule, dismissal times at the city’s four elementary schools are staggered, starting at 2:45 p.m. and continuing until 3:10 p.m. Officials said teachers and students could gain time for instruction if enough buses are added so all elementary schools could be dismissed at the same time.

Superintendent Cornelia Brown said board members asked for information on adding buses to do so, which will be provided at a board workshop session Monday.

The session, which is open to the public, begins at 5 p.m. in the Capital Area Technical Center cafeteria.

Board members also are scheduled to discuss the possibility and costs to provide services to all students in their neighborhood schools.

Augusta has some citywide programs — such as an autism program and English-as-a-second-language programs — provided in only some schools. Students who need those services attend those schools where those services are offered.

Brown said board members will discuss creating “true neighborhood schools that service the needs of all students in their home schools.”

Board members are also scheduled to discuss their goals for the past school year and set goals for the current school year; discuss improving the public image of local schools; discuss adding to Cony High School programming; analyze student achievement data; look at the results of a staff survey conducted over the summer; and evaluate school facilities and student population trends.
