WINTHROP — Winthrop voters will see contests for Town Council and the school board at the polls Nov. 8.

Two Town Council seats are open, and only Sarah Fuller is running for re-election. The two other people hoping to win a council seat are Judith Stebbins and Jennifer Currier.

David Rheaume, vice chairman of the council, will not seek re-election, citing personal reasons.

Rheaume has served a total of 12 years as a councilor. He served nine years, took a term off, then returned for nine more years.

Stebbins served six years on the school board before moving to the Town Council in 1980. She spent about 20 years as town councilor and currently serves on the town’s Board of Assessment Review.

Currier is on the Recreation Committee, has served on Winthrop Green Committee and worked with the Comprehensive Planning Committee.

For the two openings for school board, incumbent Mark King is vying with Kristin Shumway and Virginia Geyer.

John Mitchell, chairman of the school board, is not running for re-election. He has served for the past nine years, at least half of those as chairman.

“I wanted us to have a full-time superintendent, and we formed the alternative organizational structure, and that was important, and we have some good people running to take the position,” Mitchell said

Shumway has two children at Winthrop Grade School and formerly taught school in Massachusetts.

Geyer just retired after 39 years as physical education teacher at Winthrop schools, and also is a certified flight instructor.

Three people are running for three seats as trustees of the C. M. Bailey Public Library, incumbents Lorraine Fleury and Paul Cottrell Jr., who also serves as board treasurer; and newcomer Laurie Graves. Margaret Kenney opted against running for re-election.

Nominating petitions had to be returned to the Town Office last week. Those elected Nov. 8 take office in January.
