PORTLAND — Gov. Paul LePage has declared October as lobster month.

LePage has signed a proclamation in recognition of the lobster industry. October represents the peak of the state’s lobster harvest.

Dane Somers of the Maine Lobster Promotion Council says while most people equate lobster with the summer months, it’s the autumn months that have the heaviest hauls. He says about half of the annual harvest takes place in September, October and November.

He says October is also the month when the Maine Lobster Chef of the Year is crowned. That will happen on Oct. 21 during the annual Harvest on the Harbor food festival in Portland.
