PITTSFIELD — Last week the Mount View High School football team made history by winning its third game of the season, which matched the program’s career total.

This week, the Mustangs are tossing out an old goal — making the Little Ten Conference playoffs — and setting a new one.

“We want a home playoff game now,” Mt. View quarterback Jalen Babin said.

The Mustangs took an important step in accomplishing just that after thrashing Maine Central Institute 43-6 on Friday night.

“It’s a huge win for us,” Mt. View coach Jack Brady said. “We have now doubled the most wins we’ve had in a season.”

The 2008 Mustangs finished 2-6, setting a barometer for victories. This season’s Mt. View team (4-2) has won three of its past four games and is poised to reach the postseason for the first time.

“I don’t think we can help but not make the playoffs now,” Brady said. “Are we a playoff team? We’ll find out.”

Mt. View certainly looked like one Friday.

Babin rushed for two scores and threw for another to lead an offense that gained 298 net yards of offense. Babin rushed for 59 yards and threw for 71 more, completing three of his five passes.

He rushed for both of his touchdowns during the second quarter to help the Mustangs grab a 23-6 halftime lead.

“We knew we had to win this game,” he said. “We’ve come down here before, and we got it handed to us. We took it to heart.”

It was a long night for MCI (2-4), which trailed 16-0 in the second quarter before it finally gained a first down.

The Huskies were held to 114 yards of total offense, with 68 of them coming on its lone scoring drive of the game — a Trey Vintinner 7-yard rush with 3 minutes, 8 seconds left in the second quarter.

Adam Ogden led the Huskies with 77 rushing yards.

“It’s frustrating,” he said.

The Mustangs dominated the game from the start, holding the Huskies to minus-2 yards in the first quarter alone.

MCI punted four times in the opening 12 minutes and turned over the ball once — an interception — in what was otherwise a forgettable start.

“Our line made a big difference,” Brady said. “They were blowing huge holes through them. We have some tremendous athletes all over the field.”

MCI didn’t record a first down or execute a play of more than 4 yards until the second quarter.

Ryan St. Clair staked the Mustangs to a 6-0 lead with a 6-yard touchdown run with 8:27 left in the first quarter. Babin then completed the two-point conversion pass to Taylor Reynolds for an 8-0 lead.

Mt. View padded its lead on its first possession of the second quarter with a six-play, 61-yard drive. Babin rushed for a 1-yard score then completed the conversion pass to Tyler McCormick for a 16-0 lead.

“We just kept it going,” Babin said. “We were rolling.”

Babin later scored on a 35-yard run with 44 seconds left until the half.

Will Nunn rushed for a team-high 77 yards for the Mustangs.
