ORONO — Spencer Abbott scored two goals and had an assist as the University of Maine men’s hockey team defeated Northeastern 6-3 today at Alfond Arena.

The No. 15/16 Black Bears took a 3-0 lead on first-period goals by Adam Shemansky, Abbott and Kyle Beattie. They led 4-1 after two.

Joey Diamond had a goal and two assists for the Black Bears. Anthony Bitetto, Mike McLaughlin and Vinny Saponari scored for the Huskies.

Chris Rawlings made 23 saves for Northeastern (0-1-1, 0-1-1 Hockey East), before he was relieved eight minutes into the third by Clay Witt (11 saves). Dan Sullivan made 24 saves for Maine (1-1-0, 1-1-0).

Maine opens a two-game series at 8:30 p.m. Friday at No. 3/3 North Dakota at Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, N.D.
