NORRIDGEWOCK — Residents will have a chance Thursday to learn about a proposed natural gas pipeline that would run through their town.

The public informational meeting with representatives of Kennebec Valley Gas Co. is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Town Office.

Residents can learn more about where the proposed gas line would be installed, the timeline for its construction and the requested tax-increment financing district.

The company has proposed construction of a natural gas pipeline through 12 communities in central Maine, including Norridgewock.

In addition to viewing a presentation about the project, running from Richmond to Madison, residents will be able to ask questions and raise concerns, said Town Manager Michelle Flewelling.

“This is their official launching of their project within our community and will be the first of many to come,” Flewelling said.

Funding for the pipeline hinges on signing up major industrial users and convincing each of the 12 communities agree to a tax-increment financing plan.

A TIF shelters developers from paying property taxes for a period of time in order to help fund the work.

Kennebec Valley Gas Co. has asked the town to return 80 percent of property taxes to them during the first 10 years and 60 percent the next five years.

The town of Madison also is competing to build the pipeline. Its project would not require each town to agree to a TIF.

At 7 p.m. Thursday, a representative from Central Maine Power Co. will answer residents’ questions and respond to their concerns about wireless smart meters.

The smart meters have not been installed in Norridgewock but could be at any time, Flewelling said.
