THORNDIKE — Nick Papsis scored the game-winning goal with 14 minutes, 45 seconds left to lift Winslow to a 3-2 win over Mt. View on Wednesday in a Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B boys soccer game.
Winslow (9-3-0) moves into fourth place in the Eastern B Heal point standings, while Mt. View (9-3-0) falls to No. 5. The top four teams in Eastern B receive a first-round bye in the playoffs. Both teams have two games remaining.
Papsis made a diagnol run and got behind the Mt. View defense 35 yards from the end line. Teammate Finn Ducker gained control of the ball in the midfield and quickly lofted the defense for Papsis to run onto.
The senior raced forward, dribbled into the penalty area and powered the ball past Mt. View goalkeeper Chris Montimony.
“We have been working in practice on exchanging positions and moving forward,” Papsis, a defender, said. “It felt good to finally put the game away.”
The two teams played constrasting styles in each half of the game. Mt. View moved the ball quickly and generated counter attacks to control the first half of play. Winslow took control in the second half using a disciplined midfield game that relied on a strong passing game through the middle.
“Winslow dominated us in the second half,” Mt. View coach Chris Hink said. “They did a good job of being in the right spot and nearly every play.”
Gabe Smith gave Winslow a 2-1 lead six minutes into the second half. He stole the ball from the Mt. View defense and kicked in a shot from the 18. Mt. View tied it 11 minutes later when James Philbrick picked off Nic Stewart’s centering pass out of the air in the goalie box and one-timed in a shot.
Winslow’s midfield of Ducker, Graham Clark and Taylor Roy started to combine passes in the middle as the Black Raiders put constant pressure on the Mustangs defense.
“We were trying to keep the game at our pace,” Ducker said. “We didn’t want to resort to the kick and run and we were successful.”
Mt. View took a 1-0 lead with 22:50 left in the first half on Aaron Elkins goal from just inside the penalty area. Ducker scored to tie the game with 10 minutes left in the half.
Montimony finished with six saves on 14 shots, while Winslow keeper Mackenzie Michaud made three saves on 12 shots.
