AUGUSTA — Maine’s Office of Securities, the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, AARP Maine, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and other consumer protection and law enforcement agencies will present a free half-day program aimed at providing advice and materials to help attendees protect their resources and guard against becoming the victim of financial exploitation.
The event, “Consumer University: Exercising Financial Wellness,” will be held 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Spectacular Event Center in Bangor.
The conference will address topics including investment scams, identify theft and mail and telemarketing scams. The conference will also offer an overview of common and newer types of investment products, and the pros and cons of reverse mortgages. SEC Commissioner Elisse Walter will speak at approximately 9:30 a.m.

KHS to present talkon Frances Perkins
The Kennebec Historical Society will present “Frances Perkins: The Woman Behind the New Deal,” a talk by Tomlin Coggeshall and officers of the Frances Perkins Center.
Coggeshall is the grandson of Frances Perkins, President Franklin Roosevelt’s secretary of labor and architect of many of FDR’s New Deal programs. She was the first woman Cabinet member.
The program begins at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Hall-Dale Elementary School, 26 Garden Lane, Hallowell.

Cote suffered fatal heart attack
AUGUSTA — Paul Cote, 48, of Sidney, who died Tuesday during a public hearing in Augusta, suffered a heart attack, according to the state medical examiner.
The cause of death was listed as cardiac arrest because of cardiovascular disease, according to Mark Belserene, office administrator.
