FARMINGTON — Bangor scored two first half goals then withstood a Mt. Blue comeback bid to earn a 2-1 win in a Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class A game at Prescott Field on Thursday.
Mt. Blue (6-5-1) was playing its third game in as many day and this one was played in a steady rain. The weather did not have an affect on the quality of play. Bangor (10-1-1) won its third straight one-goal game since suffering its only loss of the season to Lawrence last week.
“Mt. Blue came back at us hard, they never quit,” Bangor coach David Patterson said. “We absorbed their pressure fairly well, in the second half.”
Bangor was sharp in the first half, stringing together passes and making the Cougars play defense for long periods. The Rams capitalized on a corner kick 22 minutes into the game when Chayce Beck floated a ball to the middle of the goal where Hunter Boyce redirected it into the net.
John Szewczyk made it 2-0 with 9:40 left in the first half when he rocketed in a pass from Connor Griffin.
“We played five players across the middle in the first half giving us more possessions and passing opportunities,” Patterson said. “We came away with the win and that is what’s important.”
Mt. Blue didn’t have many chances to score in the first half, but came to life in the second. The Cougars managed just two shots in the first half, but took five in the second.
“There were times in the first half where we passed and possessed the ball well,” Mt. Blue coach Joel Smith said. “We had three really good looks and only capitalized on one.”
Blake Hart scored Mt. Blue’s lone goal with 31 minutes left in the second half. He dribbled down the left side, beating the Bangor defense, and striking a left-footed ground ball across the penalty area and into the net.
Gage Kennedy, Josh Carlson, Steven Yardley, Jamie Schanck and Zach Johnson all played well defensively for Mt. Blue.
The Cougars continue a jam packed schedule when they travel to Skowhegan on Saturday. They finish the regular season at home against Erskine on Tuesday.
