A second day of steady rain Friday and the threat of thunderstorms forced the postponement of several high school football games.
All have been rescheduled for today when rain is expected to end this morning. Also scheduled today are cross country meets for the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference and Mountain Valley Conference, along with state individual golf championships.
Gardiner was one of the last Central Maine schools to postpone its football gam. Coach Matt Burgess said at 2:30 p.m. they intended to play Madison. Plans changed a short time later.
“We pulled the plug at 3:25 right before Madison was getting on a bus,” he said. “They wanted to play. We wanted to play. But the problem was the forecast called for lightning. We didn’t want to have Madison drive down here and deal with a delay or a postponement.”
The teams will play at 4 p.m. today.
Burgess added Hoch Field was “wet and squishy.”
“It wasn’t entirely under water, but it was not good,” he said. “There is a lot of standing water on both sidelines.”
Football games rescheduled for 1 p.m. today include Morse at Mt. Blue, Skowhegan at Edward Little and Washington at Mt. View. Camden Hills at Nokomis and Winslow at Oak Hill are scheduled for 1:30, while Lawrence plays at Cony and Dexter at Kents Hill at 2.
Poland at Winthrop will be played at 3 p.m., while Madison at Gardiner is scheduled for 4 p.m. Four games — Maranacook at Dirigo, MCI at Hermon, Messalonskee at Mt. Ararat and Waterville at Brewer — are scheduled for 7 p.m.
The golf championships for boys and girls will be played at Natanis Golf Course in Vassalboro.
Natanis pro Dick Browne expects them to tee off on time at 10 a.m.
“It doesn’t get any better this time of year,” Browne said. “The wind is supposed to be a bigger factor (today). The good players play well in all conditions.”
Browne said he was concerned about water collecting in bunkers, and rule adjustments will be made for that as well as balls that plug in wet grass.
“It will probably be lift, clean and place,” he said. “Our greens drain so nice they’re never really a problem.”
Both the KVAC and MVC cross country meets will be held in Augusta, with the KVAC Class A and B schools competing at Cony High School and the MVC schools running at the University of Maine at Augusta.
The KVAC does not begin until the girls race at 11 a.m. The MVC starts at 10.
