In his Oct. 7 letter about Protect Maine Votes, Rep. Robert Nutting cautions us readers not to believe everything that the media publish. I agree — especially when it comes to Nutting’s letter. Nutting advises us that the Republican legislators who registered on election days in the past “were following the law at the time.”
Of course they were. The Maine media know that. Protect Maine Votes knows that. Readers know that.
Nutting questions the credibility of Protect Maine Votes and states it is “misleading” Maine voters. The media and Maine voters can read and we can understand. The point was and is: the Republican legislators were allowed to register and vote, and that’s the way it should be for all Mainers.
Nutting calls his bill “reasonable.” I completely disagree. The bill is un-American and unpatriotic. Voting officials have time to process registrations and process ballots. “Late registrations” are not the issue. Registrars and clerks have stated it’s not a problem.
Anyone who is fully qualified to vote and has proof of residency and ID should be allowed to cast a ballot.
Nutting concludes that “accuracy” in elections is not a “top priority” with Protect Maine Votes. Have there been accuracy issues that will be solved by denying people the right to register and cast a ballot on election day, or the day before? None that the secretary of state or anyone else could come up with.
People have fought and died for our rights, including the right to vote. Qualified residents should not be denied a ballot on election day. The law is wrong. Vote yes on 1.
