WINTHROP — There were a few minutes in the second half of Tuesday’s Eastern Maine Class C quarterfinal when it appeared the Boothbay field hockey team might pull off an upset.

The No. 7 Seahawks had just scored to tie the game and grab the momentum. Winthrop recovered, though, and with just under eight minutes to play sophomore Rachel Ingram delivered the game-winning goal to give the Ramblers a 3-2 victory and a spot in Saturday’s semifinal.

No. 2 Winthrop (11-2-2) will face No. 3 Central on Saturday, while Boothbay finishes at 6-7-2.

Ingram’s game-winner was the byproduct of a surge by the Ramblers over the last 10 minutes of the game. It came shortly after a Winthrop penalty corner in which a half-dozen players attacked the Boothbay cage and goalie Madison McCarthy.

“It was passed in, the defense tried to take it out and I knocked it in,” Ingram said.

Ingram scored a goal with two seconds left in the first half to give the Ramblers a 2-1 lead at the break. The Seahawks took a 1-0 lead on Alex Clarke’s goal just over 12 minutes into the game. Shauna Carlson tied the game for Winthrop, then fed Ingram for her goal at the end of the half.

“We knew once we scored they were going to come back with fire,” Carlson said. “We determined at our last practice that if they came back with fire we had to come back with more.”

The Seahawks were outplayed and outshot (8-1) in the first half, but they weren’t intimidated. Just last week, they played the Ramblers to a 1-1 tie. They controlled the first 15 minutes of the second half and tied the score on a quick shot in front by Arden McSwain.

“They definitely took it to the next level,” first-year Boothbay coach Kate Iuzeolino said of her team. “A lot of our games this season we’ve been pretty close to the top teams.”

The Seahawks outshot the Ramblers 6-5 in the second half. They scored on their only shot of the first half, a one-timer by Clarke into the right corner after taking a pass from Jess Murray along the left side. Carlson, who played a strong game at center-mid, tied the game with 3 minutes, 11 seconds left in the half after McCarthy was caught out of her cage.

“I just managed to keep my stick on it and push it in,” Carlson said.

Winthrop finished with 15 penalty corners to five for the Seahawks. Ramblers goalie Alyssa Arsenault made four saves on seven Boothbay shots, while McCarthy made eight saves on 12 shots.

“In previous years we’ve taken them lightly,” Carlson said. “They showed us when we played them o their field that they’re not an easy team.”
