The 60-year-old Westbrook woman who in August became the oldest American woman to swim across the English Channel has set a new world record for swimming.

On Tuesday afternoon, Pat Gallant-Charette became the world’s oldest woman to cross the Catalina Channel in California. In 14 hours and 12 minutes, she swam 21 miles from Catalina Island to Long Beach, Calif., according to her blog.

Gallant-Charette, a registered nurse, works at the Barron Center in Portland. She and her husband Jim Charette have two children and two grandchildren.

Gallant-Charette started participating in long-distance swims when she was 46 years old as a tribute to her brother Robbie who died of a heart attack. She trains off Pine Point Beach in Scarborough and, in the winter, at the YMCA in Freeport.
