NEWPORT — Even the top field hockey teams want to get better. Earlier this season, Nokomis was struggling on its offensive penalty corners.

The Warriors switched some things around, and they’ve gotten great results. Nokomis scored three goals on corners Wednesday to beat Oceanside 6-0 in an Eastern B quarterfinal.

“We changed up our corners,” said Nokomis forward Drew Graves, who now inserts the ball on offensive corners. “It just makes it easier for us to get some shots off and work better passing. We just work a lot better this way.”

Graves had two goals, while Leah Edmondson had three and Marissa Shaw also scored. Edmondson also had a hat trick when Nokomis defeated Oceanside 3-1 on Sept. 13.

“We were a lot more intense (this time),” Edmondson said. “We came out a lot more excited and pumped because it was our first playoff game, and we knew that they were going to be a tough team.”

Nokomis dominated the play, and Oceanside didn’t get a shot until there was 15:26 left in the game and the Warriors had a 5-0 lead. In the first half, Edmondson scored the first goal on an assist from Graves, and the second goal went Shaw-to-Edmondson-to-Graves. Edmondson later scored from Shaw and Nokomis led 3-0 at the half.

Edmondson got her third goal 7:21 into the second half off passes from Taylor Lovley and Brittany Dunton. Shaw scored on a nice solo drive six minutes later, and with 4:43 to go, Graves knocked in a rebound to make it 6-0.

“We focused a lot on keeping the ball tight to the stick, and our passing and communicating,” Nokomis coach Katie Thompson said. “Since we saw them last time, those are things we have really emphasized and really focused on, so it’s good to see that working on that so much has paid off.”
