THOMASTON — A World War II veteran from Thomaston who participated in the invasion of Normandy at Omaha Beach is to receive long-delayed medals for his wartime service.
U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree of Maine will award the medals today to Ben Harding. They include the WWII Victory, American Campaign, Pacific Campaign and European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign medals.
As a member of the Naval Reserves, Harding served overseas from 1943 to 1946. Besides participating in the invasion of Normandy at Omaha Beach, Harding served in the Mediterranean and the Pacific.
Pingree says he had never received medals for his service, and the Democratic congresswoman’s office worked with the military to recover them.
