AUGUSTA — A car chase of varying speeds Thursday evening that started in Gardiner, and went through Sidney and Augusta, ended with the arrest of Dominic Pomerleau, 18, of Sidney.

Pomerleau is also expected to face charges with regard to the chase that involved Gardiner, Augusta and Maine State Police as well as deputies from the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office.

Augusta Police Lt. Christopher Massey said the chase began when a Gardiner police officer spotted Pomerleau driving in Gardiner and attempted to stop him. Massey said police had been looking for Pomerleau for several months after he fled from an Augusta officer.

Massey said the Pomerleau, who was driving a 2005 Nissan Sentra led the Gardiner officer on a pursuit which was joined by the other agencies.

The pursuit, sirens blaring, went through the city and along West River Road to Sidney and then back into Augusta along Route 27. Speeds ranged from 60 mph on the outskirts and 30-40 mph in the city.

The vehicle  ran over a spike mat set by Augusta police on Civic Center Drive. An officer who set that mat suffered a minor injury, Massey said.

When the car finally stopped about 6:15 p.m. at Court Street on the east side of Augusta, it was described as riding on a rim and the front bumper.

A girl who was riding in Pomerleau’s car was not injured and does not face any charges, Massey said.

Massey said the original warrants were for a probation violation, burglaries and assaults, and a notation indicated that Pomerleau could be violent towards law enforcement officers.
