The Monmouth and Mt. Abram girls soccer teams meet for the second time this season today, but this time it’s win or go home.

The teams play in a Western Maine Class C preliminary round game in Salem to see who advances to next week’s quarterfinals.

Monmouth is seeded ninth and Mt. Abram eighth. The teams played once in the regular season. Mt. Abram winning 1-0 despite being outshot.

“We took 20-something shots and they took four,” Monmouth coach Gary Trafton said. “We had opportunities and we didn’t quite make it there.”

There are more prelim games this fall because the Maine Principals’ Association has included two-thirds of the teams for tournament contention this year after several years of going with 50 percent. Eventually, each class is whittled to eight teams. Quarterfinal play begins Tuesday for the girls and Wednesday for boys.

In an Eastern A prelim today, the Erskine boys play against Mt. Blue for the third time this season. They play today at 3 p.m.. at the University of Maine at Farmington. Erskine lost to Mt. Blue 3-0 in the regular-season finale Tuesday.

“It was 0-0 at the half,” Erskine coach Phil Hubbard said. “They outshot 10-9. We had a couple of mental breakdowns.”

Earlier this season, Mt. Blue beat Erskine 1-0.

“We’re just going to play hard,” Hubbard said. “The team that executes best is going to win.”

In an Eastern A girls prelim Saturday night, No. 9 Cony travels to Fairfield to play No. 8 Lawrence. The teams did not play during the regular season although they tied 3-3 in a preseason tournament.

“We kind of evenly match up to a certain degree,” Lawrence coach Mike Hinkley-Gordon said.

The Bulldogs are making their first tournament appearance in five years. They have a couple of dangerous scorers in senior Hannah Sheperd and freshman Faith Forsythe. Cony has played well done the stretch and is getting goal scoring from Mia Diplock, Josie Lee and Hayley Quirion.
