TOWNSHIP 2 RANGE 9 — State police say a 56-year-old Millinocket woman has died after her car veered off Interstate 95 and struck a tree.

Investigators say Elizabeth Gould may have experienced some kind of medical problem just before her SUV crashed near mile marker 238, about six miles south of Millinocket, late Thursday afternoon. There was no indication that Gould tried to apply her brakes before the crash.

Witnesses said the car caught on fire after the accident. Three truck drivers who were the first to arrive on the scene used fire extinguishers from their rigs to put out the flames, but the woman was pronounced dead after being brought to a hospital.
