I plan to vote no on Question 1.
I’m not sure there was any voter fraud and I’m not sure there was any malice in getting voters registered the day of the election.
I am, however, concerned about two things. The first is the chance of mistakes being made because of busy polls.
I’m sure one less thing for the clerks to accomplish is a plus and reduces the chance of a mistake.
The second is a preference. I really would like voters to think a bit about voting. Even if it’s just thinking that they must register two days before the elections.
I believe that, all too often, registering and voting on the same day is something someone else asks the voter to do. It’s not a thoughtful decision.
As I understand the process, the voter still can vote the same day they register using the absentee ballot system, and no additional requirements are levied on voters from the standpoint of identification.
To give our town clerks and those who help in the voting process one less thing to do makes sense to me. To cause some thought to go into the voting process makes sense, too.
A no vote will hopefully help the process a bit.
