Federal money aids special ed teachers

AUGUSTA -- More than one in six Maine children require special education services, but only one in eight teachers working with them is fully certified. Maine will use a five-year, $3.35 million federal grant, announced Friday, to try to fix that. The grant aims to improve training programs and increase the number of highly qualified special education teachers.

Elks honor Emergency Medical Service personnel

WATERVILLE -- The Waterville Elks Lodge recently held an appreciation dinner for local firefighters, police and emergency responders. The event was the result of one member who felt she could make a difference. Barbara Currie, wife of late firefighter Ronald F. Currie Sr., recalled when they had been invited to such an event during her husband's years of service. She got support from the lodge and just ran with it.

Medical marijuana complicating arrests

Dealing with a person's medical marijuana when they are arrested for another offense is posing a sticky legal issue for Maine law enforcement. Several sheriffs and jail administrators say they want no part of the problem and have left it in the hands of arresting officers.
